Classic entries held in France and England

Every year in March, Classic hopes popped up through the entries recorded in the Jockey Clubs of the countries hosting the prestigious races that will crown the best males and females of the generation of 3yos. Two colts owned by Sheikh Abdallah Al Maddah are among those horses who showed promising enough at the time of the entries to consider such goals.

AREEN is entered in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr.1) to be held on June 6th at Chantilly and in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr.1) that will take place on July 14th at ParisLongchamp. Last year at 2, Areen ran three times under the care of Pia Brandt, and broke his maiden tag in his second outing when winning the Prix Etalon Mukhadram at Deauville on August 22nd. On that day, he defeated Godolphin-owned Botanik, who holds entries in the same two Classic races, subsequent 2nd in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr.1), only beaten a neck. Areen then headed to the UAE where he was not able to distinguish himself. Back to France, he is now in training with Frédéric Rossi at Marseille.
Areen is one of the last representatives of the “Iron Horse”, Giant’s Causeway. His first dam, Grey Lina, a daughter of Empire Maker out of a Linamix mare, has already produced a Stakes winner in the US in the name of Royal By Nature. Born in USA, Areen arrived in France, at Haras de Gouffern, by the end of his birth year. He was raised and then prepped at Gouffern with the aim of being offered at the 2019 ARQANA August Yearling Sale. Consigned under the Gouffern Taylor Made Sales banner, the big grey colt did not reach the reserve price set by his owner and was eventually bought back for €130,000.

XAARIO holds an entry in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr.1), scheduled on Sunday May 16th at ParisLongchamp, in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr.1) and also in the 2,000 Guineas Stakes (Gr.1) to be run on May 1st at Newmarket Rowley Mile. This son of leading French sire Kendargent made his debut last May under the care of Pia Brandt, finishing a good 2nd defeated by subsequent Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère hero Sealiway. In June at Clairefontaine, Xaario outclassed his opponents and won in an impressive fashion his maiden by 6 lengths. On that day, he dominated by 8 lengths Darkness, a colt trained by Jean-Claude Rouget who subsequently landed the Critérium de Lyon (L.). In October 2020,  Xaario did not show competitive in testing ground in the Critérium de la Vente d’Octobre Arqana, run during the Arc weekend at ParisLongchamp. Since then, he was exported to England and is now in training with David Menuisier, a French trainer settled in Newmarket, who is shaping with a view to the major Spring rendez-vous.
Bred by Haras de Colleville, Xaario is the second foal out of Xaarina, a quality racemare who ran twice 4th in Listed contests. Offered at the 2019 ARQANA October Yearling Sale by Mr Pariente’s breeding entity, Haras de Gouffern’s commercial arm I.T.C (International Thoroughbred Consultants) placed the final bid at €50,000 to purchase the grey on behalf of Sheikh Al Maddah.

Best of luck to the two colts and their connections!
